Of the three major groups, the Yahoo Directory is the most popular and most difficult Directory to get listed with. Yahoo charges a $299 submission fee and it doesn't guarantee you will get listed, they have several rules that must be followed in order for your site to be placed, that is why with Yahoo you have to do it right the first time. You have to make sure that every rule is followed and that your site is ready and optimized. Once the correct procedures are followed the traffic generated from a Yahoo listing is amazing!

The Looksmart Network is the second major group on the Internet. This group is comprised of: MSN network, AltaVista, Netscape, InfoSpace, CNN.com and CNET.com.

The submission process to this Networks is a bit different than most. They only offer a per click-through plan, it works like this: You pay a $49 submission fee, then you deposit $150 minimum into your new "Looksmart account", as people click on your site through the listing, you pay $0.15 per click, which gets depleted from your account balance. This means better qualified leads and you only pay when traffic goes to your Site.

The third group is the dmoz.org or the Open Directory Project. This group is comprised of: AOL, Google, Lycos, DirectHit, HotBot and many more. This is a very large Network, but it's run very differently than the prior two groups. The ODP is the most comprehensive human edited directory of the Web, and they have their own rules and guidelines to follow to guarantee a listing.
